Yesterday we talked about how attitude can affect the results of your violin practice.  We talked about how believing that you can do something is often a key in actually being able to doing it.  You are more likely to be able to do something if you believe you can do it.

So we need to be able to change our attitude.  One thing that people can do to affect their attitude is talk to themselves. Richard H. Cox describes self-talk as an effective method of controlling thoughts and influencing feelings.  According to Cox there are three distinct categories of self-talk.

1. Task-specific statements relating to technique.

2. Encouragement and effort.

3. Mood words.

Task-specific statements relating to technique means talking to yourself about a specific motor skill. For instance, as you play you can use such thoughts as "relax the shoulders," and "soft right hand." Not ony does this help you to improve the technique you are working on, it also helps you to focus your attention away from negative thoughts.  Concentrating on where your bow is contacting the strings, for example, can help you ignore that cramp in your right hand!

So as you play
tell yourself something that you are working on!  Don't just do it . . . say it to yourself!  Repeat it often enough and progress is more likely to occur!
