Don't always practice your violin at full volume.  In other words you don't always have to play as loud as you can!  There are two reasons for this.

First, playing loudly creates tension in your bow hand and arm. When performing, tension can be a good thing, but if you are practicing something difficult or new, generally, the less tension the better!

And speaking about vacations for the ears, have you ever seen a practice mute?  If you want to practice with the weight and strength of a real performance,  but you don't want to disturb other folks, a practice mute might be just the thing!  Place it over the bridge and play away!  You'll be amazed how quiet it is!
This is a great practice reminder.  A refrigerator magnet that frowns before practice, but turns into a smile when your student turns it around after his practice and proclaims "Practice Done."  Click either picture to have a look.
Second, it is often easier to hear whether or not something is in tune at half or 3/4 volume. It might be due to a clearer tone. It might be just putting more concentration into the notes. But soft practice is often more in tune than loud practice.

(My Mom might have added a third reason . . . something about a vacation for her ears.)
Thinking about my dynamics (volume) takes concentration. Dynamics is  in third place when practicing a new section. Work on one thing at a time. Technique, intonation, then dynamics.
