If you are working on a new skill or in a new area it is important that the student understand what is being worked on.  Simply having a student play something over and over in a given manner does not help unless the student knows why it is important.

A beginning student does not need to completely understand how muscles interact or the reasoning behind finger placement on the fingerboard.  Sometimes you just have to trust the teacher and accept the reasoning, "That will make things easier later on." But if the concept is within the student's understanding, explain it to him.  You'll be amazed how much faster the student will learn.

And students . . .
Never be afraid to as "why" you play a piece, hold your instrument or stand the way you do.  That is the way you will learn the best!
