Some mechanical aids are good to have to help a student's practice and learning.  I suggest a metronome.  This is a device to help you keep time and rhythm.

When you start a piece set the metronome slow and play the piece at that speed.  As you get a little better, speed the metronome up a little bit.  Then faster and faster, little by little, until you reach the speed that you want to go.
