Today's Tip
Practice using a new set of ears!

No, I am not suggesting that you go to a plastic surgeon and have a transplant or anything like that. I am suggesting that you invite other people to listen to you practice.  It may well be that they hear something that you do not.  It may be that they see something in you playing that you don't realize you are doing.

It is easy to play perfectly while you are with your teacher.  If you are like me, you pay attention to every move you make, every note you play.  It may be that when you practice you let things slide just a little.  A little bit more careless.  A little bit lax.  A little bit too much pressure . . . or maybe not enough.  A second set of eyes in the practice room can see that.

A second set of eyes can be even better than recording yourself or making a video of your practice.  We don't always see ourselves the same way others do.  We may not realize that we are doing something, even if we watch it or listen to it 100 times.  Consider asking a parent, a fellow student, a colleague from an orchestra in which you play or some other knowledgable person to watch you practice a piece or a passage that you can't get just right.  Four ears are often better than two, two heads better than one, and four eyes better than two.

And don't forget to say thanks!
