Breathe naturally when you play your violin!

There are times when you may want to emphasize something, and you may alter your breathing.  But for the most part playing the violin is a normal, everyday activity.

I have noticed students holding their breath as they play.  The natural result of this is a build-up of tension!  Tense players produce strained notes.  (And eventually they turn blue and fall over.)

And don't forget that for the most part the more oxygen you have in your system the better your concentration will be.  Holding your breath will not help here.

Also remember that if you gasp for breath it is audible.  Beautiful music interspersed with gasps, grunts and snorts just doesn't work!

Relax and breathe normally!
