What Else
At age 16 Monica enrolled in the Royal Academy of Music, where she spent 5 years.  She became a very good violinist, but was never content with the music she had to play.  She felt that modern artists like Eric Clapton were more exciting.

Then someone lent Monica a baroque violin and she fell in love with it.  The baroque violin uses gut strings.  It has a thicker neck and a shorter fingerboard than the modern violin.  The instrument did not have a chin rest, and was usually not even placed under the chin.

Monica became known as a specialist in baroque music.  Eventually she was invited to form an orchestra with Ton Koopman. This became the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Monica was the concert master from 1980-87.

She founded an early music ensemble called Sonnerie which is based in London and has recently released CDs of Mozart Piano Quartets and Biber Violin Sonatas.   She is also the Artistic Director of
Portland Baroque Orchestra.  She also spent time as Professor of Baroque Violin at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, Germany. She was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in 1994. Monica Huggett performs on a violin made in Cremona, Italy, in 1618 by Hieronymus and Antonius Amati.

Monica Huggett was born on this date in 1953.  She is the fifth of seven children, and started violin lessons at age six on her brother's violin.  She, like most kids, became discouraged when she learned that she would have to practice every day.
