The last two days we talked about how talking to yourself can improve your performance, and we discussed actually saying something about your performance, or as Cox called it.

The day before yesterday we talked about "Task-specific statements relating to technique."

Yesterday we talked about "Encouragement and effort."

The final type of self-talk is what we use to actually change our mood.  This is probably the hardest aspect of self-talk to discuss.  This involves saying something that you know will put you into a state of mind that you find helpful.  You can do this before the practice or performance as well as at several times during the performance.

And I think that you can actually play it on your violin to make a difference.  I have a 34-note sequence that is important to me that I can sing or play that focuses my mind where it needs to be and almost always changes my mood and makes me focus on what I am doing.  I almost always play it before I practice, and I try to play it two or three times during a practice.  It seems to help me.

So, I use the same self-talk techniques that athletes use to boost their performance to actually make me a better violinist.

And don't forget, self-talk is just like any other skill.  The more you do it the better you get at it.  The more you try to take control of yor thoughts, the more success you have doing so . . .
and the better violinist you become!
