How Much Practice is Enough?

That's a Great Question, and one that I really don't have an answer to.

When I was in elementary school we were required to practice 20 minutes every day.  When I was in high school I had a 45-minute orchestra class every day plus my weekly lesson, and I tried to put in another half hour every day.  Today I am an amateur of average ability. My friend Larry put in three hours a day along with his classes and lessons.  Today he is a professional string player with several Grammy Awards.

My guidelines would be:

1.  Try to practice every day.

2.  Be sure to warm up well before practice

3.  Practice the hard stuff, not what you can already do.

4.  Set a minimum time limit, a maximum time limit,  and a realistically challenging performance goal at the beginning of practice.  If you reach your goal before the minimum time limit is up, keep working until the minimum time limit is up.  If you reach your performance after the minimum time limit but before the maximum time limit, you can quit, although I would rather see you continue to play . . . even if it's just fun stuff.  If the maximum time limit comes and you have not yet reached your goal, look at your progress for the day. (With younger students this is a job for the parents.) Seriously consider whether it is more important to move on to other things or to reach your performance goal, clean the violin and put it away.

And be sure that no matter how long you practice you are giving your best effort!
