Sometimes your best practice tool is a pencil!  Take a pencil with you everyplace you take your violin.

One time I heard that A VIOLINIST USUALLY REMEMBERS, BUT A PENCIL NEVER FORGETS!

Your pencil helps you to remember
-  Exactly what it was your teacher wanted you to do during your daily practices.

-  The fingering patterns you used when you played the piece successfully last week.

-  That there was a key change, and the fact that the rest of the orchestra is about to play a C-Sharp when your fingers want to play a C-Natural.  Making that change will keep you from being embarrassed again.

-  That the section leader wants this passage to begin with a downbow so that your section looks as good as it sounds, and the proper bowing will ensure both.

Everyone makes mistakes.  Using that pencil helps to make sure that at least YOU won't be the one repeating those mistakes.
